Shlomo Alter – Artist Biography
Shlomo Alter (b. 1936, Romania) was born into a family of restaurateurs and exhibited a prodigious talent for drawing from an early age. In 1948, following his family’s immigration to Israel, Alter pursued formal artistic training while attending high school, studying painting under the noted Israeli painter Aaron Avni.
Alter’s early promise was recognized internationally when two of his pastel works were selected for UNICEF’s World Touring Exhibition of Young Painters. During the 1960s, he received intermittent guidance from the celebrated painter Marcel Janco—his relative and one of Israel’s foremost modernist artists—whose influence contributed to Alter’s unique artistic voice.
In 1975, Alter committed himself fully to his artistic practice. Over the subsequent decades, he has presented numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions across major cultural centers in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Israel.
Alter’s oeuvre is distinguished by a refined impressionist palette and a whimsical, naïve sensibility. His compositions frequently transcend the traditional boundaries of the canvas, extending onto the frame itself, thereby engaging the viewer in an immersive experience. In addition to painting, Alter has employed original serigraphy to faithfully reproduce the nuanced color gradations and delicate linear qualities characteristic of his work.
