Mark Eliason (b. 1967) is an American mixed-media artist whose meticulously crafted collage works redefine the possibilities of contemporary figurative art. Best known for his richly layered Pop Surrealist compositions, Eliason creates emotionally resonant images using thousands of individually cut fragments of recycled magazines, newspapers, comic books, tissue papers, and other printed materials. Each work is painstakingly assembled by hand over the course of 120 to 175 hours, transforming discarded imagery into intricate visual narratives that reward close examination.
Although Eliason demonstrated artistic ability from an early age, his professional path initially followed a different direction. Raised in a family of builders, he studied chemical engineering before transferring into the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Prior to completing his degree, he left college to pursue a career in construction, eventually becoming a licensed general contractor and co-owner of a successful construction company with his wife. Throughout these years, he continued to nurture his artistic interests through drawing and decorative decoy carving, earning recognition for his craftsmanship, including a Best in Show award from the Pacific Flyway Association.
A pivotal turning point came in 2017 when Eliason, at the age of fifty, resolved to devote himself seriously to art. Beginning with hyper-realistic graphite drawings before expanding into watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, and ultimately mixed media, he developed the highly distinctive collage technique that has become his signature. His process employs thousands of carefully selected paper fragments as “pigment,” layered onto plywood panels to build depth, texture, and subtle color transitions while embedding hidden details and symbolic imagery throughout each composition.
Eliason’s work is characterized by a compelling fusion of realism, fantasy, and pop culture. His subjects—ranging from children, animals, angels, and iconic cultural figures to imaginative allegories—invite viewers to engage with multiple layers of meaning.
